Its design started in 1934, with three companies submitting proposals. Krupp's VK2001/K was chosen, with production beginning in 1936. The Panzer IV D featured increased side and rear armor, an external gun mantle, and a re-introduced hull machine-gun. It served in Poland, France, the Balkans, North Africa, and the Soviet Union.
